Press Release
Urgent Need for Measures to Prevent Road Accidents in Malda District
The recent tragic accident near Gaur Banga Station on National Highway 34 in the Jadu Pur Gram Panchayat area of Malda district is a matter of grave concern for all of us. Last night, around 11 PM, a speeding vehicle collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the death of six people and leaving one person critically injured. The injured individual is currently receiving treatment at Malda Medical College.
All those who lost their lives in this accident were residents of Malda district, particularly from the Alipur area under Kaliachak Police Station. The victims were between the ages of 18 and 20, which has deeply shocked our community. This incident highlights the urgent need to take immediate steps to ensure the safety of our young generation.
According to data provided by the West Bengal government, the number of road accidents in Malda district has increased alarmingly in recent years. The district’s strategic location as a major transit route, combined with poor road conditions and inadequate traffic management, has contributed to this rise in accidents.
In light of this situation, we urgently request the following measures be implemented:
1. Installation of speed cameras and warning systems on National Highway 34 and other major roads in Malda district.
2. Regular road safety audits in accident-prone areas to identify and address potential hazards.
3. Launching awareness campaigns for drivers and pedestrians on road safety practices.
4. Improvement of road infrastructure, including lighting, signage, and the construction of service lanes.
5. Increasing the presence of traffic police, especially at night, to strictly enforce traffic rules.
The people of Malda district expect effective measures to ensure safe roads and their well-being. We hope the government will take immediate action to help save lives.
